New ship model basin under construction

These are exciting times for the Wolfson Unit and all those at the University of Southampton with an interest in marine technology. The new towing tank represents a great opportunity for us to develop and expand our core services for the benefit of our existing clients, and to extend the service to others.

A centre of excellence, the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), is being established with Lloyds Register moving from London to set up their new headquarters on the University of Southampton’s Boldrewood campus, where a range of new research and testing facilities are being developed.

The towing tank will be largest of the facilities, 138 metres long, 6 metres wide and 3.5 metres deep, equipped with state of the art wave making facilities and a high speed carriage. It will provide a great resource for the UK’s marine industries, as we shall be able to offer an increased range of commercial testing services, efficiently and at affordable rates, with additional time available for research into new developments in hydrodynamics, alternative energy and sports science.
