MAIB chooses Wolfson software

The Wolfson Unit is pleased to say the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has recently purchased the full hydrostatics and stability suite HST and the general plotting program GoPlot. On the 16th of April Matteo Scarponi, who is responsible for the HST program at WUMTIA, commissioned the software and provided a day’s staff training at the MAIB offices in Southampton.

Unlike the majority of HST customers, often interested in the preparation of stability information books, MAIB inspectors will be using the program to analyse the causes and circumstances of marine accidents. It is expected that the full range of HST functionalities will be used, in particular: hull modelling, digitising of lines, tank capacities, hydrostatics, intact and damage stability, floodable lengths, longitudinal strength and inclining experiment analysis.

For many years the HST suite has received consistent, positive feedback from naval architects and regulatory bodies worldwide, and we are confident that our software will soon become a valuable asset for MAIB inspectors.

The MAIB is a branch of the Department for Transport, located in offices in Southampton. The Branch has four teams of experienced accident investigators, each comprising a principal inspector and three inspectors drawn from the nautical, engineering, naval architecture or fishing disciplines.

The role of the MAIB is to contribute to safety at sea by determining the causes and circumstances of marine accidents and working with others to reduce the likelihood of such accidents recurring in the future. Accident investigations are conducted solely in the interest of future safety.
