The Wolfson Unit have recently conducted a hull optimisation for a 46m Burger Boat displacement motor yacht, the inital hull design was provided by the client and the Unit optimised the lines using RANS CFD on the Universities 8000 node super computer.

The Wolfson Unit has recently conducted tests for Marine Current Turbines (MCT) to determine the wave and current loading on the 'Seagen 2MW' turbine. Loadings were determines for a variety of positions when the power train, rotors and cross beam were positioned in the splash zone between the operating and maintenance positions.

The Wolfson Unit is pleased to say the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has recently purchased the full hydrostatics and stability suite HST and the general plotting program GoPlot. On the 16th of April Matteo Scarponi, who is responsible for the HST program at WUMTIA, commissioned the software and provided a day’s staff training at the MAIB offices in Southampton.

The RNLI hosted the RINA conference 'SURV8' at their college in Poole in March. Over 60 delegates were treated to 17 presentations covering a wide range of search, rescue and survival craft including conventional planing hulls, RIBs, hovercraft and personal watercraft.

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects has awarded their 2012 Small Craft Group Medal to the Wolfson Unit in recognition of its long standing service to the small craft industry.

Dr Albert Nazarov of Albatross Marine Design (AMD) will be presenting the paper "Design development for a 16.7m Rescue/Patrol Boat" at the 2013 RINA SURV8 conference. The paper describes the design and optimisation of a composite fast craft for the Russian agency EMERCOM, and demonstrates that Wolfson software is a must-have element in the designer's toolkit.
